In some way, this UPSC Preparation could also be called as our journey of Self Purification and Self-realisation. We encounter weaknesses and strengths. We test our endurance. We have to overcome many peaks and valleys. We have to pull ourselves when we are dead tired. We have to sober our souls when it is pained.
Sometimes, it will be very difficult to lead ourselves and continue our journey in the dark times. We give up. But when we seek the help of that unknown existential force, we might get some positive energy. If we are pure, it will lead us till the end of the goal. That belief, that purity of the prayer is needed when we are in despair. Other things needed for the success will happen magically.
This Lead, Kindly Light by Saint John Henry Newman poem was written some 200 years ago. But still it is being considered as an all time favorite motivational(divine) piece of work. This poem was used to be the regular humming words in Gandhiji’s Ashrams. Gandhiji also mentioned at places about this poem in his Autobiography. So, Try to understand the core message of this work and try to internalise it in your system. It will definitely help you.
Lead, Kindly Light, amidst the encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!
So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
