Question 1 of 5
Passage-01
For fourteen and a half months I lived in my little cell or room in the Dehradun jail, and I began to feel as if I was almost a part of it. I was familiar with every bit of it, I knew every mark and dent on the whitewashed walls and on the uneven floor and the ceiling with its moth-eaten rafters. In the little yard outside I greeted little tufts of grass and odd bits of stone as old friends. I was not alonein my cell, for several colonies of wasp and hornets lived there and many lizards found a home behind the rafters, emerging in the evenings in search of prey.
Which of the following explains best the sentence in the passage I was almost a part of it’?
CorrectSol. (d)
Option (a) does not capture the essence of the phrase Option (b) is true, but it is not the best explanation. ‘I was almost a part of it indicates a sense of cohesiveness or feeling at home. So, option (d) is correct.

Question 2 of 5
Passage-02
In Part III of the Constitution, which assures people certain fundamental Rights, Article 25 proclaims that “all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the Right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion”. What people fail to notice is that this proclamation is prefixed with the words “subject to public order, morality, health and to the other provisions of this Part”, which set conditions precedent for the legal protection of religious practices of any community. The closing words of this prefatory rider in Article 25 virtually constitute a subordination clause placing, other fundamental Rights mentioned in Part III over and above the Right to religious freedom. Among those other fundamental Rights is the Right to equality before law and equal protection of laws – assured at the outset and elaborated in later articles to mean, inter alia, that the state shall not deny equal protection of laws to any person or group of persons on the basis of religion alone.
What is the most logical inference from the above passage?
CorrectSol. (b)
Passage mentions that Article 25 in-builts all people are entitled to Right to firmly practice religion but is subject to public order, morality, etc. Hence, themost logical inference is question of religion freedom is open to state intervention, therefore, option (b) is the most correct choice here.IncorrectSol. Question 3 of 5
Passage-03
One of the biggest ironies around water is that it comes from rivers and other wetlands. Yet it is seen as divorced from them. While water is used as a resource, public policy does not always grasp that it is a part of the natural ecosystem. Efforts at engineering water systems are thus efforts at augmenting water supply rather than strengthening the capacities of ecological systems.
Which one of the following is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?
CorrectSol. (c)
The passage talks about strengthening the capacities of ecological system.
IncorrectSol. (c)
The passage talks about strengthening the capacities of ecological system.

Question 4 of 5
Passage-04
Political theorists no doubt have to take history of injustice, for example untouchability, seriously. The concept of historical injustice takes note of avariety of historical wrongs that continue into the present in some form or the other and tend to resist repair. Two reasons might account for resistance to repair. One, not only are the roots of injustice buried deep in history, injustice itself constitutes economic structures of exploitation, ideologies of discrimination and modes of representation. Two, the category of historical injustice generally extends across a number of wrongs such as economic deprivation, social discrimination and lack of recognition. This category is complex, not only because of the overlap between a number of wrong but because one or the other wrong generally discrimination, tends to acquire partial autonomy from others. This is borne out by the history of repair in India.
What is the main idea that we can infer from the passage?
CorrectSol. (d)
The main idea that we can infer from the passage that, it is difficult, if not impossible, to repair every manifestation of historical injustice.IncorrectSol. (d)
The main idea that we can infer from the passage that, it is difficult, if not impossible, to repair every manifestation of historical injustice. -
Question 5 of 5
Passage-05
Soil, in which nearly all our food grows, is a living resource that takes years to form. Yet it can vanish in minutes. Each year 75 billion tonnes of fertile soil is last to erosion. That is alarming-and not just for food producers. Soil can trap huge quantities of carbon dioxide in the form of organic carbon and prevent it from escaping into the atmosphere.
On the basis of the above passage, the following assumptions have been made.
- Large scale soil erosion is a major reason for widespread food insecurity in the world.
- Soil erosion is mainly anthropogenic.
- Sustainable management of soils helps in combating climate change.
Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?
CorrectSol. (b)
From elimination method, statement 2 can be eliminated and hence only option b is remaining. Only third assumption is valid for the above passage as soils take years to form and vanish in minutes, therefore sustainable management of soils helps in combating climate change.IncorrectSol. (b)
From elimination method, statement 2 can be eliminated and hence only option b is remaining. Only third assumption is valid for the above passage as soils take years to form and vanish in minutes, therefore sustainable management of soils helps in combating climate change.
