Introduction:

Covid-19 pandemic has caused significant psychological distress worldwide. The initial focus is necessarily on the physical consequences of the infection. However, there is recognition that the significant psychological consequences emerging out of this catastrophe need to be addressed as well. The recent wave of infections globally riding on the surge of Omicron variant have once again brought the issue of mental health during this pandemic in focus. In fact a UNICEF survey conducted last year pointed out the scale of this problem specially for children and youngsters. Realizing the impact that COVID-19 may have on the mental health of the people, Indian Government has taken a number of initiatives to provide psychosocial support during COVID-19 including guidelines and advisories for the same.

  • Many psychological problems and important consequences in terms of mental health including stress, anxiety, depression, frustration, uncertainty during COVID-19 outbreak emerged progressively.

  • Furthermore, telephones helplines, Internet access, active social networks, dedicated blogs and forums should be implemented in order to reduce social isolation and loneliness as well as allow to specific populations (e.g. infected subjects in hospitals or quarantine settings) the successful communication with their loved ones.
  • Marginalized populations such as elderly individuals or those with psychological problems should be able to actively consult with clinical psychotherapists to rapidly detect warning signs.
