Day – 24
1) Chandru is a Class III boy in a reputed private school and Ms. Seetha is his class teacher. Chandru’s mother has passed away 3 years back and his father chosen for a remarriage with Mrs. Lakshmi. His father has moved alone to USA a month back for a 2-year assignment there and Chandru is now under care of his stepmother, Mrs. Lakshmi. Chandru is a meritorious student in his class but he is notorious to steal the stationary items of his classmates like pencil and pens. Recently, the students have collectively came to the class teacher Ms. Seetha and asked her to take immediate action against Chandru. Seetha has asked Chandru to bring his parents to discuss this issue. Now, Chandru cries and pleads to Seetha and claims that he has no mother and only his step-mother is with him now, he says she is loveless to him and also does not give him any money to purchase stationary items. He says, this helplessness forced him to steal stationary of classmates. Chandru appeals to her that, if complained, his step-mom will stop his education also ultimately.
What should be the decision of Seetha as a teacher, keeping in mind that school is an institution to inculcate ethics, not otherwise? (250W,20M)
2) Aristotle has said humans are social animals, we are bound to live as a society and are under some social obligations. As humans, we are supposed to behave differently from animals and we possess a unique set of values called „human values‟ which underpins and binds the social system. However, the social cohesion is not only reducing but also an individual’s commitment to human values and a tendency to discharge social obligations have reduced. We see many merely watching an accident victim in road without attempt to save the person fighting for life. This is observable in all fields; people today have isolated and compartmentalized themselves. We often hear from many “it is none of my business”, because people are indifferent to social issues and society’s miseries. This phenomenon is called „social indifference‟ in which people mind only them, their family and kinship and friends, but be indifferent an unmindful to rest of the society. Clearly bring out the ethical dimension in the problem of social indifference‟ by highlighting the relevant causes and consequences. (250W,20M)
